Bought this (actually the slightly different model from two years ago, PACR93) to cool off a hot upstairs bedroom. The fan and compressor unit are very loud, and its constant cycling on and off of the compressor creates a big “thump” that wakes me up every time. However, it did cool down the room at night.

For one summer, that is. When we dragged it out this summer, the machine now overheats and shuts itself down after about 15 or 20 minutes of use. The Windchaser online FAQ stresses the length and arrangement of the exhaust hose, but meticulous hose adjustments did not fix the problem. My theory is that the unit worked very hard that first summer and it just can’t do it again. I think these units have a fundamental design flaw, which is that they try to force a huge amount of air through a relatively tiny exhaust hose.

More complaints: the Windchaser customer support line is a joke. It is a recording that tells you to look at their online FAQ. Also, the units various modes of operation are really hard to figure out, especially when you just want to raise or lower the temp a little in the middle of the night and you’re too sleepy to pore through the manual. For more than $300, I would expect a better machine.
