We live in NW Montana where humidity is low and temps are high beginning in July. Bought a swamp cooler first; it was worthless. So we bought this portable ac from Best Buy. Assembly instructions were a bit confusing but not too bad, once we decided where we’d vent it (through a vertical window). We put the ac in front of our fireplace. All we had to buy was some extra window stripping, cost about $3 at Home Depot. Some of the other reviewers for this product mention that the vent hose has to be attached with duct tape; I haven’t had that problem.
We’ve had the unit on more or less full time for about six weeks and it just goes and goes! Haven’t had to drain it. On low setting, the unit is only slightly noisier than a fan on high setting. We keep the ac on low and it keeps our 400 sq ft living/dining/kitchen quite cool. We preset the temp to 72 degrees and put the unit on auto, and we’ve had no problems. Just lots of cold air. The unit work so well, in fact, that our pets sometimes abandon the living room for the relative warmth of our storage closet down the hall!
The unit isn’t really “portable” because it’s vented out of a living room window. But it moves a few feet so we can swing it and point the air where we want it most. Also, we don’t have to give up TV or computer while the unit is on. Our circuit breakers have not tripped even at night, when we have ac, TV and the computer all running at the same time. And we live in a multiplex apt. building.
I cannot recommend this unit highly enough. It has made this unbearably hot summer bearable even pleasant for my son and me. Just be sure to have at least two people on hand when you bring the unit home or have it delivered, because the box weighs about 100 pounds.
