With rooms in my apartment getting as hot as 90 degrees before the hottest part of the summer, I had to get some relief. So I researched all the portable air conditioners available, and found that most people who had tried more than one brand tended to settle down at last with the Whirlpool ACP102PS. This is understandable: it is an excellent air conditioner, putting out really cold air (down to 61 degrees), and with options for fan only (very cold even with just fan) and dehumidifier (which is useful if it’s both hot and humid where you live). I definitely recommend it, but there are some things to consider before you decide to invest.

Because it’s a serious appliance that pumps out real air conditioning, not just cool air, it comes packaged like a refrigerator or other serious appliance would, making for a very heavy (but secure) package. Directions on the package and in several other areas state that the box should only be moved and the unit installed by two people as you could hurt your back or other areas. As I just don’t have a local friend to help, though, I succeeded in dragging the box up to my front door from the delivery spot, then lowering it over the stoop. I then had to cut the packaging off before I could stand the unit up, although it was reasonably easy to move after that. So it can be done, but you need to plan and use care; it would be best to have two people.

The warnings others have given about the amount of room needed for the outlet hose are important, and it can only be vented out a window that slides, whether horizontally or vertically. There may not be quite enough of the “slider bar” to cover the window; my windows are not huge but I had to fill in with insulation material and duct tape. I am neither very strong nor very mechanically minded, but I was able to set up the unit myself so it’s not too difficult.

The only problem I had after set-up was that the outlet hose has come loose from the plastic piece that is supposed to hold it in the window as well as from the piece that holds it in place in the back of the outlet. It took an annoying number of applications of duct tape to finally get it to stay.

Also, don’t plan on moving it too much once it’s installed; it does leak water when moved (as well as causing the hose to fall out yet again). When the tank fills, you cannot remove it separately, but have to push the entire unit (which means removing all the duct tape from the outlet hose every time you empty it). There is a little rubber hose (rather the size and appearance of a garden snake) that is too low down to empty into a bathtub or sink. If you don’t have a floor drain, you will need to drag it to a door and empty several gallons of water out of it there.

In general, for a small room, it is almost overcool, so spillover is helping to keep the rest of the apartment cooler. Despite the maintenance needed, it’s well worth the higher than usual price if you’re suffering from heat. I found it far cheaper at Best Buy online than anywhere else with excellent delivery and tracking (also cheaper than anywhere else). The regular online site is even cheaper than Best Buy Outlet, which is especially high on EBay, with hidden shipping charges.
