The Amcor Portable Air Conditioner
My wife and I got new windows for our house last year. And with that, didn’t want to put some clunky, heavy, window mounted air conditioner in them, so that they can rattle around all summer, decreasing the stability of our new windows/frames. So, with that, we decided to look at the portable models.
I should say there are other factors that we wanted an inside, portable air conditioner for as well. Outside smells and pollutants, and bugs. It may sound picky, but when we would have the window a/c units, we would always have issues with Skunk smells, when a skunk is outside. Many people say you can shut off the outside air with a window a/c unit, but for some reason it just never really worked. If there was car exhaust fumes, or animal smells of any kind, or even a neighbor smoking a cigarette outside, those smells seem to always make their way into the house, via the window a/c unit. That, coupled with having to secure the window unit in the window, various bugs coming through cracks or the vents, moisture issues, and overall security of our home having one of those window a/c units in, is what prompted us to look at a portable indoor a/c unit.
We decided on the Amcor unit, simply because it was on sale at Home Depot for $290, compared to other stores where the unit was $350. The reason why we went with an indoor a/c unit was because of security, and everything else I described. With this unit, you simply open the window about 5 inches, place the exhaust on the sill, and close the window to hold it in place. Done. It’s literally that simple. The Amcor has a technology where it collects the humidity from the air, and uses part of it too actually cool the unit, while distributing the rest out of the exhaust. Personally, I think it’s brilliant! And it works perfectly! So far we’ve never had to empty the unit like some portable a/c units. With some indoor a/c units, you have to literally empty the water tray, each time it fills. With the Amcor, it’s intelligent enough to redistribute the humidity, so that it never has to be emptied.
**I would suggest making sure you have a window screen on your window, as this will keep bugs out of your exhaust hose. Although it’s not required.**
There was an issue when we first got it, because it wasn’t cooling the room. For some reason, when we had it set on Auto, the room wasn’t cooling. I almost brought it back to Home Depot, thinking it was defective, when I decided to play around with the controls. When I took the Auto selection off, and then set the cool down to like 68 I think is the lowest setting, the thing just pumped out cold air! Taa-daa! Perfect!
If there is anything about the Amcor that I don’t like, is the noise. That is literally the only advantage to having a window a/c unit. Outside of that, I will never own another window a/c unit again. I am now sold, thanks to Amcor. I’m actually going to pick up another unit tonight! HA!
The other really nice quality about this unit, is yes, it’s portable. You want to take it into another room? Simple take the exhaust out of the window, unplug it, roll it into the other room, plug it in, put the exhaust out the window, and your done! Cool air! You just can’t beat this, especially again for the security issues. Leaving the house? Take the exhaust out of the window, close and lock the window. Done! No worrying about someone pushing in your window unit when you’re on vacation. And yes, it’s easier to do than you think.
Overall, I give the Amcor a 9 out of 10. 9, simply because of the noise factor. But, to be fair, it’s actually not a bad white noise to go to sleep with, it really isn’t that bad at all. And because we are so pollen conscious, because of our allergies, and concerns for general air quality, you are never pulling air into the house, only pushing it out! That’s just too darn cool! No pun intended.
For those of you concerned with being able to bring the unit into another room. My wife is 108 lbs. soaking wet. She can easily roll the unit into the other room, with ease. I highly recommend this unit, if you are considering a portable a/c unit, and why not! You will not be disappointed.
Another really great quality of this model is if you don’t have a window to stick the exhaust out of, but do have a sliding glass door, the exhaust attachment is easily modified to fit into the slot in the sliding glass door. Too damn cool!
Give it a try, I think you will be surprised how cool, it really is. AH HA!!!! (sigh)
Cheers,
Richard
