Windchaser PAC9 Portable Air Conditioner Review A short-lived product

Bought this (actually the slightly different model from two years ago, PACR93) to cool off a hot upstairs bedroom. The fan and compressor unit are very loud, and its constant cycling on and off of the compressor creates a big “thump” that wakes me up every time. However, it did cool down the room at night.

Windchaser PAC9 Portable Air Conditioner Review Better products out there

I purchased the Pac9R model (comes with remote) to supplement the central air conditioning for a 3rd floor room. This 3rd floor becomes extremely hot during the summer months because the central unit isn’t strong enough to cool it, and I needed something to help keep it cool, as I use this room as my home office.

Setup was not too difficult. I did have to drill through the wall to vent the exhaust outside because our non-standard windows would not support the supplied window kit. Instructions should have included that a diffuser is required though.

Windchaser (PACRWC) Air Conditioner Review terrible cooling, expensive

We bought this for an upstairs room. It took 2 hours to decrease the temp from 90 to 85 in a 15×12 room, which should be no problem for a 12K BTU unit. All night long operation, which is loud for a bedroom, it only managed to cool the room to 78, 10 degrees warmer than the outside temp that night! Perhaps the condenser is broken (it arrived banged up, but there were no more in stock to replace it and there is no indication on the instrument panel that there is a problem. There is no troubleshooting section to determine if this is the case. It does feel like the airflow is strong and somewhat cooling, but compared to window units I’ve had, this takes a long time to cool, is loud, and was 3x more expensive than a comparable window unit with similar BTU. We swapped it to a downstairs smaller bedroom and it says it’s 72 after cooling for 6 hours, starting from 88. The brightness of the instrument panel may also be an issue for some people at night. After 2 nights of operation, this unit is going back to Costco. It can’t even bring the temp down to outside temps! We’d be better off with a fan and an open window!

Windchaser (PACRWC) Air Conditioner Review Disappointed….

As indicated by the previous reviewer, very disappointing performance. Cooling is just ok in my room (16×16 =256 sf), but the dehumidifier that functions automatically when cooling, fills up the internal holding tank at least once a day(running the unit about 4-5 hrs per day). I live in San Diego 10 miles from the ocean, so it is not that humid where I am at. The brochure says the condensation is supposed to be exhausted out with the air circulated out from the condenser. I doubt it is working. Calls (multiple) to the manufacturer did no good. They think it is working as designed. To empty the tank, you need to haul the whole unit (75 lbs) somewhere to pull the drain plug located at the very back, bottom of the unit. A REAL pain!!. Especially if you have it on the second floor. I have now rigged up a drain hose, to drain in to a Tupperware container. To get that to work I had to build a stand to get the unit high enough to allow gravity to drain the water out. I am very disappointed in this major inconvenience, but I am more disappointed that Costco, who usually sells good products, would consider this a good product. I have not returned it yet as I am not sure if there are other alternatives that are any better. Maybe these portable units need more development time to work the bugs out, but if you visit the Windchaser web site you get the impression that they are the experts in portable cooling…. not with this unit….

UPDATE: Returned to Costco. Good news - a no hassle return !
