Do window air conditioners have to have contact with the outside?

Do window installation air conditioners have to have access to the outside? In other words, could I set one on a table and have it operate normally? I ask because I saw some “portable” air conditioners that do not need outside air, but are pretty expensive. I would like to get a cheap window one if it will work.
Thanks.
As mentioned, if it is a true air conditioner with refrigerant, it must be vented outside. Otherwise you will just be circulating air and dripping water on the floor. There are some portable air coolers that work inside; they generally cool with water, but can cause humidity problems if you are in an area with high humidity already

Windowless air conditioners?

I live on the 2nd floor of an apartment complex. We are not allowed to put air conditioners in our windows for liability issues (easier for someone to break in). But it is getting SO hot here. I have looked for ones I can sit on the floor with no worries of water leak. I am finding prices well above $450. Is there a cheaper option? Fans are just not cutting it anymore. If possible can you show links. I am so new at this and not sure what is best on the market.
How can somebody break in on the second floor? I would want something in writing from the apartment management that you aren't allowed to use a window air conditioner. What is the difference between an open window to let in some cool air and having an AC in the window?

Comparing window casement air conditioners with Portable air conditoners, which ones would be better?

Which ones would be better in terms of cooling capacity? I have heard that portable air conditioners are nosier. It seems that in my area, casement air conditioners are only 7000 btu while portable air conditioners are about 9000btu. Is btu the only gauge for air conditioner coolness?
I don’t think portable are as effective and will cost more to run..a 7000btu casement will cool better than a 9000 btu portable. I have 6800btu cooling a 16 X 20 room with a 12ft ceiling and it does petty good job..the larger the more noise. Be sure you bolt the case into the window frame because someone will breakin..or even steal the unit..

Portable Air Conditioners without hoses?

I’ve seen portable air conditioners that don’t need a hose for the hot air outlet. Are they a waste of time? Surely they must blow the hot air into the room too.
I’v seen a number of models in a office building but the only worth wile ones arn’t really airconditioners…you just fill them with ice and it blows air accross it

Portable Air Conditioners - Do they really work?

We have a really small apartment (900 sq ft) and it faces south/west (maximum sun exposure). The building does not have air conditioning and the windows are not desigend to support standard window mounted air conditioners.

We are nervous to buy a portable air conditioner. I read consumer reports and they gave portable air conditioners very poor ratings.

Have you tried them and do they work? If you have had a positive experience, which one would you recommend?
I have 2 portables in my apartment and they keep the whole place cool in the summer…….My apartment is HUGE and has 3 bedrooms……..I love the A/C’s and recommend them to anyone…..We bought 2 cheap ones 5 years ago from WalMart and they are still working great!!!! Good Luck and stop sweating….LOL

Portable air conditioners?

Has anyone here used one of those portable air conditioners that can be moved from room to room? I see them advertised that the only installation is putting a hose through a window. I was wondering if these machines really work the way the advertiser say.
My daughter just bought one from Wal*Mart. It is very efficient and she has kept her house quite cool with it. This has been a welcome relief with a new baby in the house. You don't have to crank it to the coldest setting, either to get relief. The first setting is comfortable. Good value for your dollar

Mechanical Air Conditioners

This article is an extension to “Mechanical Air Conditioners - Part I - Operating Principle”, and I will be talking about AC parts used in mechanical air conditioners.

Air conditioner parts that we put into a mechanical AC, should conform to the operating principle. Air conditioning parts for this type of equipment are divided into three categories. The,

# main and compulsory parts. This category is mandatory, otherwise, a mechanical air conditioner will not function at all

# the support parts, to ensure that the air conditioning equipment last long, and function effectively, and,
