Actually I received another floor A/C for Father’s Day, a Delonghi 8,500 BTU model from the local home super center. After letting it run all Sunday when it was cool outside (70-72F), it couldn’t keep up with solar heating of my workshop (800 sq ft) so back it went. I realized I needed something bigger and ordered the Fujitronic. I figured 13,000 BTU still might not be enough to keep my workshop a steady 72F in the dog days, but it should take the edge off and the humidity down.

I so wanted to love this machine. I wanted a portable unit to replace the noisy, inefficient window unit that barely cooled the upstairs main room of our townhouse.
Finally decided on a brand. Wanted the DeLonghi, but could not bring myself to pay the $1,600 for it. This model had more BTUs, and more features.
The thing that first struck me was the absolutely STUPID vent design. Why on earth would you have the cold air blowing downwards! Remember from third grade, hot air rises, cold air sinks. Also, the airflow was way to narrow.

I built a four level townhouse a few years ago. HVAC was a concern because the builder was only installing a single zone unit. I asked if I should upgrade to a dual zone and he swore up and down it wasn’t needed since the fourth level was only a 13×17 ft. loft. Boy was he wrong. As soon as the dog days of summer came around the loft routinely was 10 to 15 degrees hotter than the rest of the house. We are talking an untenable 95 degrees at times.

We ordered this unit on-line from www.sylvane.com because of discounts offered plus free shipping. A Mr Steven Hong was their representative. We researched the unit very carefully about how it worked, how it was to be maintained and what kind of energy use there would be. We were also concerned about the noise levels. We found out all the amps and decibels. We were interested in a unit that could be moved easily from room to room as we needed to cool different areas for different activities. We also wanted to be able to sleep through the cooling process. We were told it would be delivered by a service other than UPS. When it was delivered by two UPS men who had no hand cart and struggled with it, we were concerned. They had no control over the unit which was packed in the standard cardboard and styrofoam packaging by DeLonghi. What had happened somewhere along the way which was not evident is the unit had been dropped bending a support angle inside which made the unit noisy at times. It was repaired at our expense after we lugged it down three flights of stairs and across town in the back seat of our car. Once we had it repaired, it was quiet. Because the noise was intermittent, we had no credible way to prove the AC was flawed when we received it. Penguino in the U.S. is represented by Fox, International. While they listen and are sympathetic they did nothing to help the situation.

Dear hangfire and alpacca,
I purchased the Fujitronic FA1300 Prtable Room A/C almost a month ago. I read the reviews prior to buying the machine and felt comfortable buying it. One reviewer said use on hose above 90, the other said no two hoses is OK. Two hoses is best and works best for many reasons. if you only use one hose then you bring air in from other parts of your home. if a window is open then you bring that outside air into your room. Bad if you have allergies.

Okay, so you see the name, you think its quality…guesses again!! The unit itself is amazing but the attachments that come with it are cheap!
We purchased this model because of its name, DeLonghi. We have several other products by the same company and have had them for years.
Once we plugged it in and got the hose all put together it cooled our living room within the first 15 minutes and had dropped our temp by 10 degrees. It was a 93 degree day outside so our house was very warm on the inside. The hose, for us, was a little shorter than we had hoped for and it has a dual exhaust, which means that you have not one but two hoses to fit out of a window. We do have the old crank windows but on the box it said that it would work for any type of window. It does come with roped suction cups so that the window will stay as closed as possible.
We purchased this model on Wednesday. It worked fine for the first night but then the hose part, which goes out the window, broke on Thursday and took it back that night. We got another one, same model, got it home, out of the box and as we were putting it together it broke! We then traveled to 9, yes I said nine, different stores looking for something of the same quality but they did not carry any portable air conditioning units, they had all sold out. The guy at Lowes, the store where we had originally purchased this model said that they had one more in stock but that we probably shouldn’t purchase it. DO NOT BUY this model unless you plan on making trips back and forth to the store to by another one. We ended up with a Royal Sovereign…great!

I purchased this AC 3 summers ago while I was living in a rented condominium with tall skinny horizontally-sliding windows, too narrow for even the casement-window style air conditioners. Installing a through-the-wall AC was simply not an option, the landlord didn’t give a hoot if we fried. At the time I paid (ouch) almost $1000 from a local independent retailer, including a 10% discount for taking the slightly dented floor model - I could not find one any cheaper online, thankfully the price has dropped a bit since then! I rolled it from room to room as I needed it. I no longer live in a condo but in a house where I could put a window unit in every room if I wanted, but I still keep my Pinguino in the bedroom so that on cool nights I can pop the hose holder thingy out and open the window rather than always having a big window-AC box stuck in it.

There I was, the hottest day of the summer and my central AC failed. Soonest repair was 2 days away, and outside temperature was approaching 105 degrees. I decided to buy a room AC unit and hole up in one room till I could get repaired. It would have been simple except that all my opening windows slide horizontally, so a standard window ac would not work. The only choice seemed to be a “portable” in-room unit that offered a vent that could be mounted vertically in a sliding window. I went on line to do research, although I knew I would have to buy locally that day. If you’re thinking about one of these in-room portables, keep the following in mind:
