Do automobile air conditioners use gasoline to operate?

Does automobile air conditioners burn gasoline when they are in use.
The compressor (makes cold) and the blower (moves air) run off the motion of the engine, which is powered by gasoline.

The general rule is that is is more fuel efficient at highway speeds to close your windows and run the a/c. This is because the open windows create a lot of drag on the car.

Car Air Conditioners?

Hi, just out of curiosity I was wondering: How do car air conditioners work? My parents have always said something about freon, and my chemistry teacher mentioned it the other day. Yet I looked it up on the internet, and it was banned back in 1995 because it was a chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), which totally kills the ozone layer. What do they use to cool the air now? Thanks.
r12 freon is what was banned,134a is the new freon for auto a/c
