I bought a WA-9000E unit through Newegg to help cool my bedroom. The room is small, has a couple of computers in it, and faces the sun in the evening, so it can get uncomfortably hot. I also have roommates and usually keep the door shut.
The setup of the unit is easy, and you can begin using it almost immediately. It puts out a lot of cold air, and has a nice backlit display, but the control panel has buttons that look and feel very cheap. Also, setting up the timer function is confusing at best. It claims to have 3 different fan speeds, but there is almost no noticeable difference between the low and high settings.
After 3 days of use, the unit stopped functioning. The backlight comes on and stays on, and nothing else happens. Chances are, all the major internals are fine, and the cheap control panel has failed — strong reason to look for units with quality control panels.
I called Sunpentown and they at first said I would have to get a replacement through the retailer. I then called the retailer, who was willing to RMA the unit, but shipping it back would be at my own expense (the estimated shipping cost was $120). I then called Sunpentown back and discussed it further with them, pointing out that their online waranty information (http://www.sunpentown.com/warranty.htm) indicates that they will cover shipping both ways if the unit is less than 2 months old. At that point, they agreed to ship me a new unit free of charge. When the new unit arrives, I’m supposed to repackage the old unit in the new units packaging, and send it back using a return mailing label they will enclose (which should cover return shipping charges). I did have to give them a credit card to secure having two units out at once, however.
I can’t recommend such an expensive unit to anyone given this experience, unless a window unit just won’t work. The only other product over a $200 value that has ever quit on me during the first week of ownership was a new Ford car (always fun to take a jab at Ford for that one). And if you do get one and it fails, make sure to review the warranty claims closely and don’t give in to charges you shouldn’t have to pay.
