This portable A/C was purchased due to the fact that its EER rating is 15.5 which is the highest in the industry. This A/C is cooling the loft of the house which is about 400 sqft. The unit does cool the loft to comfortable levels to 80F with the help of some central AC even when the temperature is 100+F outside.

THE IMMEDIATE DOWNSIDE of this A/C is that it lacks a well sealed and well designed window kit and duct system. First the flexible black foam heats up quite a bit in the direct sunlight, and it does not seal very well in the window. Secondly the plastic attachment on the A/C leaks a tiny bit of hot air into the room which has to be modified to be more efficient. The plastic duct it self becomes hot, so it is good to get flex foam housing around the duct to reduce the amount of heat being radiated into the room.

There are some ways to address these flaws by some simple modifications. First I replaced the black foam with a white foamed plastic board that has been custom fitted for the window with weather stripping on the sides to make a good seal with the window. Second I attached some flexible foam seals on the duct attachment on the A/C sealing the hot air. These modifications which costs less than 2.00$ from Home Depot made this A/C minimally effective to something that is useful.

The PLUSES-

High energy efficiency means lower use of electricity per amount of heat being drawn out from the room.

Self-evaporative system uses the moisture from the room to help cool the condenser, increasing efficiency and decreasing the need to empty the water tank.

You can’t hear the compressor turning on or off.

Reduces the ambient humidity, thereby making the room more comfortable to be in.

The CONS-

The window kit is completely insufficient.

The unit is fairly noisy, but it is a constant noise that is easy to tune out.

The unit does not work at 10,000 effective BTU’s… it is more like 8000-9000 BTU depending on the type of window attachment used.

I use this unit in southwestern Idaho, which can get blazing hot in the summer, but the air is very arid. I haven’t needed to empty the water tank yet, and even after a month of operation the water tank is completely dry. This can change easily in other areas where there is much more humidity.

All in all the system is great at keeping the rooms cool at a very low cost if the window attachment kit is modified.
