I rent the second floor of a friend’s single family brick house, and the windows up there are extremely small. My friend was definitely not responsive when I offered to pay to have one window enlarged so I could install a window A/C. In order to survive the summer in St. Louis, I went with a portable A/C.

First off, I am not a big fan of the deep freeze. I am cold sensitive, and I can’t tolerate a lot of cold air. My idea of comfortable is cool, not COLD. It was so hot upstairs that I had candles that were deformed and half melted, so I had to do something.

The Soleus 7500 from Refreshhome was especially attractive because I did not have to pay shipping & handling. The price was $399.99. On the net I saw factory reconditioned portable A/Cs, for about $299.00, but I don’t care much for used electronics.

The Soleus 7500 is about three feet high and a foot and a foot wide–it looks like a computer tower on steroids. The vent is in the front of the unit. It also can operate just with the fan or as a dehumidifier. The A/C runs only on high, with the fan. You cannot adjust the fan speed. It does have rollers, and can be rolled around to whatever room, as long as you have a wall socket and a window in the room. You need someplace to vent the hot air. I have heard that you can also vent the exhaust into a basement or closet, but I would not want to try that. The exhaust is very warm, almost hot.

When the unit arrived the temperature outside was about 95 degrees. It was out of the box, hooked up and running within ten minutes. The hose frame in the window kit can be cut to fit with a serrated kitchen knife.

I have three cats, and fifteen minutes after I turned on the unit all of them laid down in front of it and refused to move. Before this they were lying around the house panting with their tongues hanging out. I noticed their breathing became less labored and they stretched out and began to relax.

I have to say that the instruction manual leaves a lot to be desired…a lot of misspelled words, and vague diagrams. The remote control looks like a child’s toy from the dollar store, but they do provide two batteries to go with it. I will say that within an hour the temperature upstairs had become more comfortable, but remember that I had this unit running in just one room. I also had a box fan running on a low setting about a foot away from the unit, to stir the cooled air around. The air in the room was cool, and comfortable, but there is no way the 7500 could cool the entire second floor.

Another thing about the Soleus 7500 was the fact that it has a water tank that has to be emptied. Depending on the humidity inside I have about five hours of operation before the sensor beeps and the unit shuts itself off. On the side opposite the water tank there is a small drain that swings out from the unit. The instruction manual says that you can connect tubing to this drain. The text in the instruction manual claims that the tubing is included (NOT!), but the diagram says that the tubing is not included (TRUE!). The manual makes no mention where the tubing will be connected to. I ignored all that and set a large plastic bucket underneath the drain. No problem. The instruction manual does not make any mention that the consumer can do this, but the unit is operating fine, and will run like that for eight hours or more.

In summary, the Soleus A/C is a good deal for someone like me who could not install regular A/C. It is better than nothing, but if I could have, I WOULD have gone with a regular air conditioning unit.
