BUYING ADVICE

Stay away! Sharp really bungled this one.

FLAW #1 — LOUD

Unlike Sharp’s previous “Library Quiet” models, this unit’s fan is jet-engine loud.

FLAW #2 — BLINDINGLY BRIGHT

Even if you are hearing-impaired, still stay away! The unit’s construction is poor. Majority of the unit is bright white styrofoam. Sunlight shines through the unit during the day. And the styrofoam amplifies normal operating noises.

FLAW #3 — NOAH GET YOUR ARK

Even if you are hearing-impaired and vision-impaired, still stay away! This unit’s water handling is among the worst I’ve ever experienced. Although the unit was installed with the proper pitch, when water built-up inside (as it is designed to do, according to the manual), its swishing around was amplified by the styrofoam and made it sound like it was raining outside.

FLAW #4 — DIRT CHEAP AIR LOUVERS

The thin plastic air louvers rattled almost immediately. I can only imagine how annoying they’d get after a few years.

ANY REDEEMING QUALITIES?

Well, not quite redeeming. But the unit has a relatively nice aesthetic design. And it is also quite compact for 12,000 btus. I think that trying to squeeze so much into such a little space might be the cause of the noise and water problems. Furthermore, the unit did blow cold air, is energy star, and had a cheap but nicely designed remote. Finally, the accordian side pieces slid into place instead of needing to be screwed in — a big improvement.

BOTTOM LINE

There are far better AC’s out there. This unit can be had for cheap — I paid $239 at Costco, and I now see Costco has added a $10 rebate. That’s a great price for 12,000 BTU’s. But, there are so many substantial flaws that I returned the unit and don’t recommend that anyone buy this.
