The SM24L30 Friedrich QuietMaster Programmable Air Conditioner is a solidly built unit. The 24,000 btu’s cools the entire house very well. I live in a center hall colonial type farmhouse that is over 150 years old (in other words the house isn’t insulated) and this single unit cools the entire top floor and all top floor rooms. Downstairs on a 95 degree day it will be no higher than 75 degrees. Remember, cool air is heavier than hot air so it drifts down the stairs nicely. In order for it to cool the entire house it must be set on the coolest setting (60 degrees). Your electric bill will reflect the extra energy consumption so be prepared. I am sure once the house is insulated it won’t require the 60 degree setting. Oh and about the 60 degree setting…. I used a digital thermometer and the top floor was at 60 degrees on the dot. To me their is nothing better than working outside in the heat and humidity and going inside to an ice cold home.

The touchpad controller on the unit may be difficult to figure out for some.

The most annoying issue with this A/C is the “Smart Fan” feature. It is supposed to automatically adjust fan speed to maintain a constant temperature and save the user money on the electric bill. If you have this feature turned on and are trying to sleep you will notice that when the fan changes speeds you hear a “click” and then a brief pause in the fan motor and then a “click” when the fan turns back on. It is too bad they couldn’t just have the fan change speeds gradually and smoothly like in the Sharp CVP12LX Portable Air Conditioner.

The name “QuietMaster” may be a little overrated. It is “quiet” in the sense that it is a 24000 BTU air conditioner. I believe other brands of the same BTU level would be much noisier. Their is a “Chassis Gasket” that must be installed properly to lower noise and maximize efficiency.

The remote control is OK. It would be nice if it illuminated for night use but I barely use the remote.

Overall this A/C is the best I have ever purchased. Friedrich really makes the best A/C’s on the market. They are expensive but you “get what you pay for” in the long run. If you buy a cheap A/C you will be buying another in a few short years.

Friedrich is dedicated to making A/C’s not like other companies that slap their brand name on sub-contracted manufactures. Friedrich uses quality components that will last forever. My A/C weighs 160 pounds. You have to remove the unit out of the sleeve to install. When you do this you get to see the internal parts. Everything looks heavy duty and solid. Which explains the weight of the unit.

Their customer service from their website is great too. I sent a request for information and they responded quickly. That to me is most important.
