After receiving this vacuum as a wedding gift two years ago, I was excited to get our new home dirty just to vacuum it back up again after hearing massive amounts of praise about the Oreck. Now, two years later, I gave it away, although we were unhappy from the start. Although the suction is nice, can pick up anything from a paper clip to a paper towel (although obviously not recommended) the passage ways get clogged very frequently, I would have to stop mid-vacuum every time to clear out the clogs. Also, having long hair proved to be an issue if any stray hairs had fallen onto the carpet, as they would get wrapped around the brush bar so that the vacuum would not pick up. My biggest gripe with the Oreck XL is probably my problem with the belt. I am not sure if I got a faulty vacuum, but I had to have my vacuum in for service at least every two months. The belt would fall off and start rubbing on something in the motor, causing there to be a burning smell (which is not easily removed!). The warranty is nice, I haven’t had to pay for any of the service done to the vacuum, but having to drive 45minutes almost every month to have my vacuum fixed got to be a pain, especially since they would have to send it out and would leave me without a vacuum for 4 days (with 2 small children and a dog you could imagine how I relied on my vacuum!). The only positive things I can say about the vacuum are that it is lightweight and the suction. Other than that, I was not happy with this vacuum. I’m sure you could get a much better vacuum with more accessories for the same price, if not cheaper.
