iRobot Roomba Intelligent FloorVac Robotic Vacuum Review Chant With Me Now…roomba - Roomba - ROOMBA! Hi, I'm Kristina. You may remember me from such films as "NSYNC: The Reunion Tour", "Epinions: Behind The Music",...

The latest in the Roomba series is the Discovery model. It cleans well on my tile floors, as do the previous Roombas. It is also easy to take apart to clean. The brush assembly snaps apart (no screws to remove), making the unit easy to clean after use. One drawback is the rotating edge brush can not be easily dismantled, with the result that hair wraps around the drive shaft and it can’t be removed.

While the Discovery model cleans well the reliability is even worse than previous models. I had a Roomba Pro Elite back in early June 2004. It developed serious electrical reliability problems. You can read the details on this website. I ended up returning the Pro Elite for a refund (I purchased from Brookstone, which has a 60 day return policy - long enough to discover major problems).

In early August 2004 I purchased a Discovery model from Sharper Image, which has a 60 day return policy. After only THREE uses the Discovery unit developed a problem. It would start cleaning and after about10 seconds or so it would just stop. There was nothing I could do to get it to continue after stopping. I called iRobot customer service and after a short discussion was told the unit was defective, and to exchange it at place of purchase. I returned the defective unit to Sharper Image and exchanged it for a new one.

After using the replacement Discovery model only EIGHT times it also broke down. The replacement unit failed differently than the first Discovery. The replacement Discovery would not take a charge when plugged into its charger. I verified with a volt meter that the power supply was functional. The problem was that when the replacement Discovery unit was plugged into the power supply that it would not take a charge. Instead of the normal light display when plugged in the replacement Discovery unit lights were not illuminated. I verified that charger plug fit properly into the Discovery unit. However, even after being plugged in for 24 hours the replacement Discovery unit would not charge. The battery was properly installed. I returned the replacement Discovery unit to Sharper Image for a refund.

The bottom line is the the Discovery model cleans well and is easy to use/clean. However the exceedingly poor reliability makes the machine a terrible buy. Avoid it at all costs.
