Haier HPAC9M Portable Air Conditioner Review Haier HPAC9M My "portable" AC broke after one day. It roles well, quite smooth. But who cares if it breaks. I should have kn...

I have a 450 square feet North facing open concept apartment with an 11 foot ceiling in a concrete building.

Because it is a condominium, I cannot have a window air conditioner nor a split system. A portable AC was the answer.

From various online BTU calculators, I figured I needed from 12000 to 18000 BTUs capacity.

An 18000 BTU unit would require a 250 volt 20 ampere circuit, so I bought two 9000 BTU Haier portable units. They are plugged into two separate electrical circuits, due to the 900 watt consumption for each unit. Each unit has one hose that must be vented outside.

Due to the building’s residual heat, inside temperature is usually in the mid to high 70s even if the outside temperature is in the mid 60s. I tested the units when it was 82 degrees outside. With both ACs blowing, I got a comfortable dehumidified 73 inside. It works. It took about 5 or 6 hours to reach this temperature, which means that I bought the correct capacity.

One caveat is the noise. It sounds like a rushing noise, like the sound that car tires make on the freeway. It is about as loud as a cheap kitchen exhaust fan on about ‘medium’. When I watch TV, I sometimes switch off the ACs. Sleeping is ok. May be bothersome to some people.

Another caveat is the power consumption. If the 900 watt specification is correct, then my two units consuming 1800 watts would cost $2.60 per day to run at 6 cents per kilowatt hour.

Haier has one model down that has mechanical controls rather than digital controls. I think the digital controls are worth the extra $20. The extra money also gets you a remote control.

addendum:

I just found out that these units support discrete infrared codes (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, you can always google it) for everything you can think of. I have now programmed the Haiers into my Marantz RC5000 remote control.
