We bought the Fujitronic FA-1300 as a backup emergency A/C. We are living in SW Florida, exposed to hurricanes for 5 months each year. After last year’s multiple hits we decided to prepare for comfortable survival. A window A/C is much cheaper but also much more difficult to handle if you plan for temporary use or for different rooms. Our setup consists of a mid-sized generator to keep the most important appliances going. With temperatures in the 90s and humidity above 70%, living without electric energy for over 4 weeks as it happened in 2004 to many people on our area is difficult and mold will settle in quickly.

The FA-1300 is a powerful, easily movable unit that gets the job done. With 10 Amps maximum power consumption it can be connected to a regular 120 Volt outlet. The power cord is heavy duty and the plug contains a GFCI function for additional safety. The basic setup is easy and the 2 hose system with the incorporated water drain line works just great. The maximum outside air temperature with 2 hoses for system cooling is 90�F. The competition that claims 110�F is talking about their 1 hose system. In our case we have the option to choose better efficiency, they don’t. The noise is acceptable even on the fan=high position. The LCD remote is easily readable and a nice feature.

Some minor drawbacks I found in connection with an otherwise convincing portable A/C. First, the manufacturer Fujitronic is not affiliated with the company Fuji which produced high quality products at very competitive prices as of my experience since the mid 80s. Fujitronic’s web page http://www.fujitronic.com/ is as poorly designed as the user’s manual for the A/C. It is an obviously small company which produces only a handful of products and at this point I am not sure if long term support for this computerized electronically controlled unit will be provided. There is not even the option of online-registration or a list of service centers. The design of the FA-1300 is futuristic and in parts unattractive. The storage compartment for the remote control is missing. When the oscillating function is being turned off, it stops in a random position. Adjusting it to a position you prefer or just getting it straight forward is nearly impossible and happens by accident. The window kit is pretty much useless. The plastic panels create wide gaps for air to leak through. Additional taping is necessary. We are also using the unit with a sliding door. A piece of plywood cut to the right size does a much better job than the plastic panels and it also insulates better.

Though not perfect, the FA-1300 is a good choice for the price and with an EER = 11.3 it is more efficient than many regular home air condition systems. We paid $540 including delivery in a few days for the over 100 lbs system.
