Dear hangfire and alpacca,
I purchased the Fujitronic FA1300 Prtable Room A/C almost a month ago. I read the reviews prior to buying the machine and felt comfortable buying it. One reviewer said use on hose above 90, the other said no two hoses is OK. Two hoses is best and works best for many reasons. if you only use one hose then you bring air in from other parts of your home. if a window is open then you bring that outside air into your room. Bad if you have allergies.
I have specific needs, heat and humidity releif, and at the same time keep the allergens out. I too had window mount problems. Two inch heavy duty heat tape took care of that. My machine is now sealed up, but I have operational questions. I live in a 10×10 room that faces the sun all day. So on a warm day my room will be 85 degrees and 70% humidity. I do not do well in this kind of weather, so releif is key. On my FA1300 I have to set the machine to 69 degrees and over considerable time it wil go down to 70 degrees. if left on overnite it will get to 60 degrees F, But it ttok a while to get there. My old Delonghi PAC290 got 30 degrees F and 30% humidity releif in 20 minutes and filtered out 98% of the stuff in the air. I would appreciate it if you could let me know what kind of results that you are getting with this machine. How much temperature relief are you getting how long does it take you to say get from th emid 80’s to 70 and does you need to set it at 60. Also what kind of humidity numbers are you getting. Your feedback is much appreciated.

Hello Everyone November 15th 2005,
I am here with an update and some more information thanks to a few helpful members. I hope that this helps.
I consider myself somewhat of an expert in this area. From 1995-2003 I used the Delonghi PAC290 Portable Room Air Condtioner. For those of you unfamiliar with portable room air conditioners I will give you a basic lesson in them. First they are machines that allow you to use them in various rooms, hence the term portable. The design is pretty basic. It has a vent hose that fits into a window mount fitting. This rectangualr fitting fits inside your window, the window then slides up against it. You can use the machine in Horizontal. vertical windows, or in sliding glass doors.
All machines use this set up, but some use just a piece of foam. You want a tight seal in the window mount fitting. You need this for a couple of reasons. First without a tight seal, hot air comes into the room from the outside. The hot air that the machine vents to the outside also comes in to the room. This hot air mixes in with the cold air coming out of the air conditioner. This makes your machine work harder to achieve thw desired temperature. It also lets allergens into your room.
How do you fix these problems. Duct tape and if needed an inch wide strip of thermal heat tape. Mount the fitting in the window, do it during the day as to catch all the visible air leaks. Take the duct tape and tape all around the window fitting securing it to the window frame. This will seal up all the air leaks. The 1 inch thermal tape will be used to tape the joint between the window fitting and the hose. This will seal any leaks that might come through here. One end of the hose hooks to the window fitting the other to the machine. In a one hose system the exhaust heat is vented out that hose. As a result heat escapes from the walls of the hose. this adds additional heat into the room. To avoid this add a thermal duct blanket over the hose.
Below Word For Word From http://www.epinions.com/user-cowboyind. I could not say it any better. I hope he does not mind using his word, which I give him full credit for.
Because they exhaust room air as they cool, portable a/c models are not usually going to be anywhere near as efficient as window units of comparable cooling capacity. And depending upon how you use the portable unit, it may or may not work satisfactorily.
As the unit exhausts room air through the vent hose, something else is also happening: It’s creating a negative pressure in the room, which is drawing air from adjacent areas in. This means several things:
-Portable air conditioners are very effective in removing stale air, smoke, cooking odors, and other undesirable indoor pollutants from a room. Moreover, use of a portable a/c in a room will essentially guarantee that odors from that room do not go to adjacent areas. This can be a big plus in homes or offices where people smoke. A portable a/c in a smoking area will keep that area at a negative pressure relative to the surrounding areas, keeping smoke and odors from migrating out of the room.
-Portable air conditioners can keep a small area of an un-air conditioned home (such as a bedroom) reasonably comfortable, especially at night when the outside temperature is not extremely high.
-Portable air conditioners are very good to provide supplemental cooling in areas of a home or office that are served by a central system but are chronically too hot. This is because the room’s replacement air - which flows in from adjacent areas as room air is exhausted - will be relatively cool.
My words from Here

One hose or two, which type is best for you. That is one of many questions to ask yourself. There are many other needs that you might have. You may need the machnine just to cool the room. Make sure that you do not use to big a machine for the room. Using too big a machine say a 12000 BTU Unit in a 10×10 sq. Ft room, will cool the room quickly but do little for humidity relief. For a 10×10 room 7500 BTU’s will suffice. You will find charts on the internet telling what size BTU is needed for your size room. Do I need a machine that filters the air. How much humidity releif do I need. Some machines only do a few percentige points of humidity. In that case a separate de0humidifier is needed.
One hose or two, two is preferable to one. Why, with two as you saw above you get a closed recycled system. The outside air is drawn into cool the machine, the hot air is exhausted out th window. No air enters the room from the outside once the leaks are fixed. With a one hose system air is brought in from other parts of the house as stated before. If there are open windows that outside air is brought into the room, not good on santa Ana Wind Days if you have allergies. Also you can use two hoses up tp 95 degrees. So in my opinion two hoeses is best.
What system to get for your needs. i currently use the Fujitronic FA1300 prtable room A/C, it is a 13.000 BTU unit.
For 8 years I used the Delonghi PAC290 with out the water. I used it 18 hours a day, 7 days a weeks year round. I got 20-30 degrees temperature releif and 20-30% humidith releif. Sears destoyed the machine during the repair process that took six months. So I had to find a new machine. I am close to having the right system in place hopefully. I have a need for heat and humidty releif, having purified air, and if too dry adding humidity with a cool mist humidifier.
For allergy releif I use two machines. The Blue Air 501 gets my lower two floors, and part of the third floor allergy free. In my room i use the Honeywell Envirocare 17005 portable air cleaner. I also use a cool mist humidifier on days when it gets dry. Add to the repitoire a temperature hygrameter gauge. Keep humidity between 30-50% for the best comfort level. I added a cieling fan to better disribute the air flow. That leaves the Air Conditioner and De-humidifier. My suggestion is this. Get all of your particulars down. then E-mail John, he is a very caring person who wants to place the best system in your home. He knows what he sells. I am very happy with the De-humidifier he sold me.
You found a machine now what. Compare prices and see what kind of deals are out there. See if John can match them. Then you will have to ship it to your home. Word of warning ship in via Ground freight only. It costs a bit more, but I had 8 machines shipped via Amazon.com damaged in shipping in two weeks. So ship via ground freight.
One last bit of Advice. if you review a machine, give specific details about that machine. For example my old PAC290 gave me 20-30 degrees and 20-30% humidity releif in 20-30 minutes. My recently peurchased PAC260 gave me 10 degrees F relief and 5% humidity releif in 7-8 hours. Nothing like I had expected. half the reviews said that it got what the PAC290 got, one half said it got what my PAC260 was getting. Be specific so that if someone like me needs certain temperature and humidity relief, I will not go through what I went through because I will know up front what the machine does. The window mount fitting, give any problems here and how you fixed them if you were able. The more detail the better. i am still looking for answers on my Fujitronics FA1300 A/C and what kind of real time numbers people are getting.

PS This is a separate issue. A year and a half ago i slipped on my front porch and broke my arm. I spent 8 hours on a 42 degree marble floor. I could have been hurt a lot worse. A neighbor fell and broke her hip. How to fix the problem. Clean the slippery cement. Get some cement paint to match your homes color. Get some sandy grit mix and mix it in the paint. paint the new mix on the cement surface. let it dry and add another coat. When you are done you will no longer slip on your slippery cemnet surfaces
