Actually I received another floor A/C for Father’s Day, a Delonghi 8,500 BTU model from the local home super center. After letting it run all Sunday when it was cool outside (70-72F), it couldn’t keep up with solar heating of my workshop (800 sq ft) so back it went. I realized I needed something bigger and ordered the Fujitronic. I figured 13,000 BTU still might not be enough to keep my workshop a steady 72F in the dog days, but it should take the edge off and the humidity down.

So far, I am really impressed with the Fujitronic over the Delonghi. For one thing, I really like the condensation pump feature. You don’t have to empty a tank daily like the Delonghi. It does have a condensation tank, which can be drained if you must, like an extended power outage I guess. There is a thin rubber hose that runs inside the air exhaust line (which carries hot air out the window vent). When the internal tank starts to fill up, the Fujitronic just pumps the water out of this tube. If you strategically place a potted plant or undesirable neighbor underneath the hose, you can kill two birds with one stone.

Another nice feature is the dual hose. You needn’t use the second hose, and the manual says you shouldn’t use it if the outside temps are greater than 90 deg F. I’ll explain. It is used to cool the compressor, which gets hot in operation. You can leave the hose off and inside air will be used for that, but that waste heat is working against the cooled air. So by drawing outside air in the additional hose, it doesn’t reuse cooled air. The caveat is that if it is over 90 outside, outside air isn’t cool enough to do the job, and the thermal cutoff will turn the unit off in order to save the compressor. You’ll have to disconnect the outside hose and wait for it to cool off.

A nice touch to two vent cover plates, so if you can’t use the second hose, you can cover the vent hole with the plate. If you want to move the a/c unit and leave the window vent in place, you can cover both of them. You can also order additional window vents if you typically use the unit in more than one room of the house, and use the plates to cover the unused vents.

The overall size is a little smaller than the Delonghi (that’s a good thing). The control panel is easy enough, the only slight limitation is that desired temps are available in two degree F steps (like 69, 71, 73F etc). When not being set, it displays the actual temp.

All the usual features you’d expect are present, like remote control, oscillate, dehumidify only, fan only, plus “auto”, which basically switches between dehumidify and a/c modes at 74 deg F. On High the fan blows quite hard.

I’ll update this review after some good, hot summer days.

Update

I used this A/C for several days in August when the outside temps where above 90. In the dual hose setup, it ran continuously and never shut down- so much for fears about that!

Now that the weather is cooler, I’ve found another really useful thing about this unit. The dehumidifier function is great to use in cool rainy Autumn weather. It keeps my tools from rusting, gets rid of that cold clammy humid feeling, is quieter and takes far less power than in A/C mode.
