It’s well into summer again with temperatures sustained in the mid 90° to 100-degree range. No central air, and our only window unit, a Sharp AF-R60DX, 6000 BTU air conditioner is now seeing service in our 12×10 (120sq ft) bedroom, where it performs to my satisfaction, doing just what it was designed to do, and doing it well. That leaves the living room, a 16×13 (208sq ft sinter oven) that I can barely stand to walk into during the afternoon. As I said in my review of the Sharp, I was going to purchase another wall unit for the living room, and I have, (though not a Sharp) it’s the Frigidaire FAX054P7A, 5000 BTU room air conditioner. Wait a minute; with one thousand less BTU’s than the Sharp, what is it doing in the living room?

(Teamed with the floor fan, inside temps are 15° to 20° cooler than outside temps. At 75° it is again bearable being in the 208sq ft oven I call the living room.)

There are noticeable differences between the two, one of them being the Frigidaire pushes air that is 10 degrees colder than the Sharp, (50° compared to 60° I borrowed an airconditioner thermometer) does that make it better? I say yes. But some say it’s not just how cold the air is, but how much of it, (the air) does the unit push around the room, and there’s not much of a difference between the two, and that is why this smaller unit is in the larger room, (plus I couldn’t afford a bigger unit, even with a $75 dollar gift card). Coincidentally they both were exactly the same price, (I didn’t know this until I re-read my other review).

Before I get into features and product details, a word about installation. Again the same as the Sharp, they both are designed for a sash window, so I installed it in the exact same manner as I installed the Sharp, fabrication by the seat of my pants. Features and Product Details. (As taken from the Best Buy page, with my own comparisons and comments in bold, and brackets.)

Cools rooms up to 150 sq. ft. (Used in concert with a floor fan, advantage Frigidaire)

2-way air direction control provides powerful cooling, (More of a rotating corkscrew affair, advantage Sharp)

Electronic controls give you the option of cool, energy saver and fan modes; on/off 24-hour timer and auto cool settings can also be programmed with the remote (fan speed adjustments can be made from 10 to 99 at multiple intervals, 90 distinct settings, I leave the thing on high. Set at fan only for room air circulation the readout will display actual room temp. Advantage Frigidaire)

Slide-out mesh filter is easy to access, clean and replace (No difference between the two.)

Dehumidification process removes up to 1.1 pints of moisture from the air per hour (1.3 for the Sharp, 2/10’s advantage Sharp though not noticeable, humidity here rarely gets much more above 30%)

Remote allows you to control the temperature without getting up, (More functions=More complex, also smaller than the Sharp’s remote, Advantage?)

Low-voltage compensation ensures you stay cool even when the voltage fluctuates (Energy Efficiency Rating 9.7 the Sharp is a 10, 3/10’s advantage for the Sharp)

An important feature that this unit has which the Sharp does not, is that the power supply cord contains a current device that senses damage to the power cord, a built in circuit breaker if you will, complete with reset button, a hands down advantage.

The Frigidaire does not have “library quiet” operation, and is noticeably louder than the Sharp.

Recommendation:

In my review of the Sharp, I said I would be getting another one. Obviously I did not.

But regardless, I think the Frigidaire is a little pricey, $75 dollar gift card not withstanding.

My wife just chirped in saying, it is “better than the other one we have in the bedroom”. Go figure.
