Having recently moved into a house without of any air-conditioning, and the heat of summer coming on fast, I was looking for an air conditioner that would cool my whole house. After doing quite a bit research on the Internet I decided that the Frigidaire FAS256R2A 25,000 BTU air conditioner was perfect for my needs. I picked it up for about $450 at a local appliance store.

I chose this Frigidaire air-conditioner for many reasons. The main reasons being was that it could be mounted as a through the wall unit, or mounted in a window. It also has a very large cooling capacity and will cool off up to approximately 1660 sq. ft. My house is approximately 1500 sq. ft., so it was definitely large enough to keep my house cool. The Frigidaire FAS256R2A air conditioner also has an Energy Star rating of 9.4 which will help you save on your cooling costs. If I remember correctly, I believe that the Energy Star tag on the air conditioner stated that it would cost approximately $286 a year to operate it. Do the math, and this means that it will cost you $5.50 a week to operate it. For me, at less than $1 a day it’s well worth the money for staying cool.

I chose to mount my new air conditioner through the wall, but if you choose to mount it in a window, you will need a window that opens up at least 19″ high and is 31″ wide, and has a width of no more than 43″. The size of the air-conditioner itself is approximately 26 1/2″ W, 18 5/8″ H, and 24″ D, and weighs about 142 pounds. Also included with the Frigidaire FAS256R2A is all the mounting hardware you will need for a window installation. One nice feature about this air conditioner is that it will slide out of its outside case. This helps when mounting it, as it allows you to first mount the outside case, and then slide the unit back inside it. This way, you don’t have to deal with the weight of the air-conditioner as you are mounting it. The air-conditioner also needs 115 V, 20 A, outlet to plug into. The electrical cord is 5 feet long, so you will need an outlet nearby to plug it into. As I mentioned earlier, I mounted my air conditioner through the wall. I didn’t do this myself due to the lack of proper tools and know-how, but I was able to hire a local handyman/carpenter to mount it in the wall for me as well as run a new electrical outlet for $250. I had to do a through the wall installation because of the fact that I have slider or casement windows, that open sideways rather than up-and-down.

This Frigidaire air conditioner has some features that I really like. The control panel on the unit has an on/off button, check filter light, sleep mode button, and other buttons that allow you control the fan speed, temperature, set the timer, and switch between the fan, energy saver, and cooling modes. The control panel also features a digital readout indicating your temperature setting, as well as fan speed settings. The temperature can be set at anywhere from 60 to 90 degrees, and the fan can be set at a speed ranging from 10 at the lowest up to 99 at the fastest speed. I personally don’t know why the fan speed settings starts at a minimum of 10 instead of 1, that’s just the way it is. I have also noticed that when the fan is set at higher speeds, it does a great job of moving air around the house. I can easily feel the breeze from this air-conditioner at least 20 feet away. This unit is no wimp, like some about the other air conditioners that I’ve encountered. It also has the ability to adjust the direction of air flow in any direction you’d like.

The timer button allows you to turn the unit on or off up 24 hours in advance, this comes in great for me as I turn it to come on an hour before I get home from work so house is nice and cool when I walk through the door. I also like to run this air-conditioner in energy saver mode. When using this feature, all you need to do is set the room at the desired temperature, and once the room cools down, it automatically shuts itself off to save on energy. When the room warms up again, it will automatically turn itself back on.

The check filter light will come on after 250 hours of operation. This is a reminder for you to check out your filter and clean it if necessary. To clean the filter, just use mild soap and water, dishwashing soap would probably work just fine. The filter is located just inside the front panel of the air-conditioner, and is easy to take out and put back in.

The Frigidaire FAS256R2A air conditioner also comes with a handy remote control that allows you to operate all the features on the air-conditioner from the comfort of your couch. If you’re like me, and can get a little lazy from time to time, this is an added plus.

So far my new Frigidaire Air Conditioner has been working perfect for me. It has plenty of power to get the job done. I’ve even found myself turning it off, while sitting on the couch, because it was getting too cold for me. When it is running, I find that it is fairly quiet, and it has not interfered with me trying to get a good nights sleep when it kicks on in the middle of the night. I have no complaints whatsoever with it, and would recommend it to anybody who’s looking for this type of an air-conditioner.

Note:

I have also seen what appears to be the exact same unit at a big box store being sold under the brand name Gibson air conditioner. It appeared to be exactly the same model except the control panel was slightly different.

Thanks for reading my review,
