Portable air conditioner indeed is convenient. However, they are usually bulky, underpowered units. BTUs usually do not reflect their true cooling ability - it usually feels much weaker than the numbers indicate.

Good thing is that higher BTU units do not have steeply higher price than lower BTU units, compared with other forms of air conditioners. It seems like at the time of this writing, the lowest BTU/price unit is in the neighborhood of $300-350 for a 7000BTU units. I can assure you, 7000 BTU portable units do NOT cool down your room. It blows cool air, but it does little to room temperature itself.

That had been my story with portable air conditioners, until I found this unit. It is 13000 BTU unit, and costs less than $100 more than the 7000 BTU unit I had. This unit is, as the number indicates, definitely more powerful and efficient. And it is actually smaller than my 1-year old 7000 BTU unit. All thanks to the air compressor that they claim to be made by one of the leading Japanese appliance makers (whose brand names include Panasonic). It seems to be very small, very efficient, and quieter-than-most compressor on the market. Fan seems to be well made too, it actually blows air out very strong.

I don’t know much about the maker of the entire unit, EdgeStar. They seems to be based in Austin, Texas. The unit itself is assembled in China.

This is one portable air conditioner unit I know for sure that does the air conditioners are supposed to do - to cool the room temperature. At least in my bedroom (not very large but quite average). A lot of portable air conditioner do not do that.
