OK, some people might be asking why I’m bothering reviewing something that has been adequately reviewed by many, many other probably more accurate and detailed reviewers. Well, I have owned Dysons now for 10 years (I owned a DC01 De Stijl http://www.dyson.co.uk/range/DC01-DES/1.jpg which my mum is still using!). Before owning one, I have used a pretty powerful little Bosch drag along and a couple of Hoover uprights, all with bags. Dyson were the first to create (and patent) the bagless Cyclone suction system. They were also the first to give you a clear cannister in which to observe just how much stuff was coming out of your carpet in order for you to be horrified and wonder what your other vacuum had been doing all this time.

Why a Dyson and not a generic

I’m not a ‘label’ person. I will buy own brand food. If I can get the quality of clothing I like at Kohls I will. So, I am not necessarily swayed by names. My mum has been through a lot of vacuums in her life as a housewife. A few lasted a great deal of time, a few haven’t. I agree with a previous reviewer in that the more plastic that is included on a vacuum, the less sturdy it seems to be. So, when you are looking at purchasing your bagless vacuum, I really want you to get the salesperson at the shop you want to buy it from to get you several out and I want you to seriously consider what I’m about to tell you.

My De Stijl is not only still going, but only one part of it is broken and that’s the hose (duct tape is a wonderful thing!). So ask yourself, as you push the Dirt Devil or Hoover versions, whether you want your vacuum to last 10 years or do you want to replace it in 2 or 3.

The DC07

I bought a reconditioned DC07 from Amazon when we came to the US in 2004. When it arrived, it felt less ’solid’ than my De Stijl. Surprisingly, it’s lighter and easier to push! I liked the carpet/bare floor switch as I have laminate flooring downstairs in my UK house and I had to attach a special bare floor attachment to the De Stijl. It seemed as if the Root 8 technology did give it some extra oomph in the suction stakes too. It certainly sucked all the doggy smell out of the wool rug that the owners had left in our rented house. It also manages to vacuum scary amounts of yuck out of mattresses when I do the spring and autumn cleaning…

The thing about the Dyson is, it’s pretty to look at and does the job it’s supposed to do very well.

I always empty the cannister into two grocery carrier bags, one inside the other, as my husband and kids are allergic to house dust mite. This way I don’t wander all round the house with a full cannister, risking getting dust everywhere. It is exceptionally easy to empty and the cannister is pretty easy to replace.

When using the crevice tool, I never reverse the wand as you are supposed to do. It works perfectly fine that way round and, to be honest, I use the crevice tool all the time, so I would get hacked off if I had to keep stopping and reversing the wand the entire time.

Unlike the DC01, the filters on the DC07 are lifetime filters and do need washing off occasionally. The brushes need cleaning of hairs as well. Other than that, after 3 years, the Dyson has been pretty maintenance free. I admit, I have no idea where the belt is and wouldn’t know where to start in replacing it. Good job it hasn’t needed replacing then…

All’s fair in love and reviews

Now I have to be fair. Just as on my De Stijl, the hose split quite quickly, within 12 months, on the DC07. I haven’t bothered replacing it as the duct tape is working just fine. I also managed to break the stair tool quite quickly, just after 6 months, which annoyed me. As I noted earlier, the DC07 seems less sturdy than the earlier De Stijl and this includes the tools. I don’t think I could have broken the stair tool on the DC01 if I’d taken a hammer to it… I’m also pretty hard on my vacuums; it wasn’t long before the front of the DC07 was looking very scuffed and tired, but I think this would have happened with whatever I had bought. The spring holding the flap onto the bottom of the cannister also broke under warranty and they replaced the whole cannister without quibble.

Despite it being lighter than the DC01, the DC07 is still heavy and I refused to take it up and down the stairs while I was recently pregnant. However, I do want to talk about the cleaning lady that I had in to clean the rental before we moved out. She arrived at our house, took one look at the Dyson and groaned. I asked what was wrong; she said ‘They are heavy and horrible at cleaning houses’ and that she ‘had used one when cleaning stores and that’s all they’re good for’. As she hadn’t brought her own vacuum (an Orek) she had to use mine. At the end of the day she grunted at the Dyson and said ‘It’s not that bad’ which I took for cleaner speak to be pretty good!

So, Jo, would you buy another one?

Unequivocally, yes. With the abuse that my vacuums get (this one has been ridden by the kids, kicked, dropped, turned upside down while being used to vac the inside of the car), I can safely say that even though it’s not made in the UK to indestructible standards like the DC01 plainly was, it’s a pretty sturdy machine. My DC01 is almost 10 years old. Although the motor burned out 3 years ago, it only cost 50 to repair it, much less than replacing the unit with an inferior vacuum and it’s still going strong now. There is a good reason why Dyson offer a 5 year warranty on all newly purchased vacuums. Our DC07 was a reconditioned unit and also came with 6 months manufacturers warranty; you don’t get that on some brand new electronics…
