I built a four level townhouse a few years ago. HVAC was a concern because the builder was only installing a single zone unit. I asked if I should upgrade to a dual zone and he swore up and down it wasn’t needed since the fourth level was only a 13×17 ft. loft. Boy was he wrong. As soon as the dog days of summer came around the loft routinely was 10 to 15 degrees hotter than the rest of the house. We are talking an untenable 95 degrees at times.

I had considered a window unit, but they are so ugly on the outside of the house. I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. For a few years I just abandoned the loft during July and August and worked elsewhere in the house.

Then one day at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, of all places, I saw the Pinguino. Freezing cold air poured out of it and I noticed only a small hose was used to vent. It took no time for me to realize that maybe I could retake my loft! So I took the 20% coupon I had brought to buy whatever it was I originally went in there to buy and bought a Pinguino.

That was the easy part. Getting it up five flight of stairs was not so easy. This unit is heavy and awkward to lift. Once I got it up, installation was a breeze. Just place l one end of the vent hose into the unit and the other in the supplied window bar. Then open a nearby window, set the window bar w/ vent in and close the window tight. No one on the outside will ever know you are using a portable A/C unit.

Unfortunately, everyone inside the house will know. This unit is not only heavy, it’s loud. But given the option of loud and cool, or quiet and hot, I’ll take the former. To calibrate the unit with the room you just turn it on and turn the temperature dial to coldest. (One annoying thing with this model is that it doesn’t let you set it by temperature like you would a thermostat for central air. It’s just degrees of cold, colder, or coldest. ) Once the room had cooled off to your liking turn the thermostat down until it turns off. That will maintain room temperature unless it gets really hot outside.

Maintenance is mostly a non-issue. It recycles it’s own vapor drip so you don’t need to dump the water collection pan like most other portable units. You do have to dump it before storage in the fall, however. The unit also requires special filters, which you have to buy direct from DeLonghi. They are quite expensive at $15 each, but you only need one per season since it’s a 90-day filter.

Generally the Pinguino does a good job. It won’t freeze you out, but it does make the room much more comfortable. However, in extreme heat (95F ) the unit is worthless. If you live in a western state this isn’t the unit for you. I’ve gotten use to the noise and sometimes clanking sound it makes when it’s recycling the water, but if you are noise sensitive its something you should consider. Overall though I like my Pinguino, it’s ease of set up, and disassembly once fall comes around. It sure beats a window unit. That is about the best thing I can say about it.
