Danby DPAC9030 Portable Air Conditioner

We bought a home with Casement Windows… Ugh… I’ve never figured out the draw they have.. and for an Air Conditioner install… UGH..

I did lots of reading and lots of epinioning last year.. and we knew we had to go portable… but how do I get around the window situation…… Some suggested plexiglass with cut outs etc. they all sounded ugly and complicated.

I arrived home from Sears with my new Portable A/C unit… It takes two people to load it on and off… there are also instructions and warning for transporting on its side.. (Some even require a wait of up to 4 hours before starting a portable A/C unit that is on its side/back.. FYI)

The box as I recall required a little intuition to undo correctly.. but if taken apart top to bottom… you don’t have to lift the unit (much :))

The array of sliders and vents looked like we had just ordered some form of particle beam weapon… WOW… (we didn’t end up using any of it)

My solution to the casement window deal.. was simple (IMHO)

Dryer vents!

Two four inch holes cut just by our Bedroom window… two dryer vents kits.. (cheap) …now how to get from the 5 inch hoses that come with this unit to the 4 inch dryer vents?

Two ABS (plumbing) fittings/adapters… one end (3 inch) fits inside the dryer vent perfectly.. almost too tightly the outside of the 4 inch side is just a tad small for the inside of the five inch hole… some weatherstripping foam gave ne a perfect fit. I did dremel tool the inside of the adapter to give me as much air space as possible.. Out side we have two neatly stacked vents (looks like an air exchanger) I put mesh on the intake to keep “things” out of it. It is easy to winterize.. it keeps the hoses low %26 out of the way inside.. and the foam allows quick disconnects for water emptying etc. I have used this for two seasons and am VERY satisified with the solution … so I felt the need to share. (I must have looked a bit odd carrying dryer vents to the plumbing section to test fit.. but it works…:)

Back to the unit… it works as advertised.. we sleep with it .. you get used to the noise quickly. It keeps a constant temperature. It takes tons of moisture out of the air about five gallons every day in the sticky weather (that is the water we have to empty.

I love the articulating fan vent… We don’t use the remote at all… we just set it and forget it.. we keep the room dark .. and doors closed.. on a 30 degree (c) day a 19 degree (c) bedroom is just perfect. I was lucky enough to have a plug right by where we wanted the install.. The plug is huge and has breakers etc on it… I would try really hard to have it a direct plug in.. (Ie no extension cords) and I think an electrician will tell you to have a dedicated circuit.. you can tell when the compressor turns on.. and it sounds like it’s using some amps…..

Short runs for the air hoses is a must.. ours expand only for necessary curves. and one gets very warm.. (hot?). They do not recommend using only the exhaust hose… (BTW - everything is VERY clearly labled) I must admit to using one hose during the install… for about three days… The unit worked fine.. but I think over time the air quality would really suffer.

The water bucket looks clumsy at first ,,, and I may look to do a drain hose this year.. but the parts are durable.. the mechanism works quite well.. and it really wasn’t a huge chore… (except emptying the thing at 3am… isn’t exactly a Kodak moment)

We are thrilled with the purchase..

Important things to keep in mind… Drain the thing for winter storage.. Clean the air filter on the back regularly… Clean out the intake screen (on the inlet side)it gathers bugs debris etc… Don’t ask it to cool a bigger space than advertised…. Don’t work against the unit by having other windows open or letting lots of light in.
