We installed this air conditioner in the middle of last summer, when the old rusty monster in our bedroom died. Having suffered from its noise and inefficiency for several years, we set out to find a better and quieter one on the Internet.
There are numerous calculators on the Web, and based on the size of the room, we figured out that 8,000-9,000 BTU should work fine. Then we went to Consumer Reviews to learn about their recommendations. LG was listed among the most efficient (and quiet) ones. Indeed, this cute-looking unit has an Energy Star, which means that it is highly efficient. To meet Federal Energy Star requirements, room air conditioners must use 10% less energy than the industry minimum standard.

We bought a home with Casement Windows… Ugh… I’ve never figured out the draw they have.. and for an Air Conditioner install… UGH..
I did lots of reading and lots of epinioning last year.. and we knew we had to go portable… but how do I get around the window situation…… Some suggested plexiglass with cut outs etc. they all sounded ugly and complicated.
I arrived home from Sears with my new Portable A/C unit… It takes two people to load it on and off… there are also instructions and warning for transporting on its side.. (Some even require a wait of up to 4 hours before starting a portable A/C unit that is on its side/back.. FYI)

My wife and I bought this thing last night at Home Depot on the tail-end of a huge heatwave here in the Northeast. We have a fairly small one-bedroom apartment on the second floor of a Cape Cod house.. I’d say total area is about 700 sq. feet. The area we wanted to cool is about 500 sq. feet, so I figured this would be enough.
Specs: 11,500 BTU/hr, EER 9.8, electronic controls, remote control, 3 fan speeds, 4 modes of operation (Cool, Energy Saver, Fan, Dry - more on these later), digital 12-hour timer, 25″W x 16″H, fancy-schmancy flat-panel front grille. Price: $279.99 USD at Home Depot

I purchased the LG LWHD8000R to beat the heat wave this weekend. I had been an A/C holdout and finally broke down. This LG model works well in cooling a small room or studio apartment. My space is 240 sq. ft. with an 8ft. ceiling. I remained cool - though the temperature outside was close to 100 degrees. The temperature inside does not get freezing cold, but cool enough. At night, I put it on a lower setting, because I felt chilled. For the most part, it runs relatively quietly and smoothly. Occasionally, on certain settings, I have heard a kind of buzzing sound, but it is infrequent. The remote controller is a convenient additional feature. This is a good choice for the price and size.

I just recently helped my friend buy and install a few window air conditioners for his new apartment. This one was a good deal at BJS wholesale club, at around $150.
The good:
-It is doing a decent job cooling a room (9 x 14) It took a while to get the room down to temperature, however it was during a heat wave (100°+ outside). Once it finally got the room down to temperature (about 4 hours) it was able to maintain the temperatures without problems.
-It has a remote control, nice for when the unit is hiding behind a couch or somewhere else that is not easy to get to.
-It has a built in off/on timer

Review’s at the bottom, first let me explain why it was so needed: From what I’ve read, the best a portable air conditioner can be expected to do is to cool a single room or supplement existing a/c. Hearing this and after reading a few negative reviews about various units I was a little worried. But for many like me this is the only option. In my apartment, despite several calls to maintenance about the weak built-in a/c, their standard response is ‘these units will only cool 10-15 degrees below outside temperature’. Ridiculous considering our Texas heat isn’t going anywhere. I said ‘Fine can I buy a little window unit since your old junk can’t do the job?’ ‘Nope, against policy’. We’re on the 2nd floor and get hit hard with the summer sun. Despite blocking all windows out with 1/2 inch styrofoam it still gets hot in here, and my apartment a/c works it’s inefficient fanny off all day drawing extra watts like a gambling addict.

Hello,
I purchased this product a week ago, and am more than pleased with it.
This AC unit runs on 240 volts. Funny thing is, I purchased it at Home Depot, and they don’t carry the right receptacle for it, so I went over to Lowe’s and found a box with about 30 of them.
I used a 50 ft 12 guage electrical wire (12/2, 3 wires total inside the cable) which I ran under the house from the living room to the circuit breaker box, a 250V 20 Amp receptacle, a regular receptacle box and cover, and a 2-pole 20 Amp circuit breaker.
